Suriname is an independent nation with a multi-cultural population of East Indians, Creoles, Indonesians, Chinese, Africans, Lebanese, Jews and Amerindians. In spite of the differences in heritage, the Surinamese are a model of racial - and religious harmony.

Most of Suriname's political parties took shape during the autonomy period and were overwhelmingly based on ethnicity. For example, the National Party of Suriname found its support among the Creoles, the Progressive Reform Party members came from the Hindustani population, and the Indonesian Peasant's Party was Javanese. Other smaller parties found support by appealing to voters on an ideological or pro-independence platform; the Partij Nationalistische Republiek (PNR) was among the most important. Its members pressed most strongly for independence and for the introduction of leftist political and economic measures. Many former PNR members would go on to play a key role following the coup of February 1980.

Wanica is a district of Suriname, in the northeast. Wanica's capital city is Lelydorp. Wanica has a population of 76,320 and an area of 442 km². With a high population density, Wanica is one of Suriname's most populated and most urbanised districts. The district's capital, originally called Kofi-Djompo, was renamed in 1905 for Dutch architect Cornelis Lely, who was responsible for many large construction projects in the Netherlands and was ... governor of Suriname.

Since the early 1990s there has been an explosive increase in gold mining activities in Suriname. It is estimated that between 10 and 60 metric tons of mercury are used in mining and released into the environment in Suriname each year. The indiscriminate use of mercury throughout the process is causing irreversible damage to the Environment and exposes both miners and the general population living in the region where mining occurs to toxic levels of mercury.
