Suriname was attacked by the French under the command of Du Casse in 1689 and under the command of Cassard in 1712, who looted the colony and ... inflicted much harm to the Jewish planters. Yet, the German community continued to grow throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and by 1836 it was larger than the Portuguese one. In 1825, all special privileges which had previously been granted to the community were no longer necessary, since they enjoyed full and equal rights as subjects of the crown. Dutch gradually replaced Portuguese as the language of the community.
Suriname is ... praised for its capital city Paramaribo, also called a ‘museum’ by many. Historical buildings take you back in time when the Dutch, English, French, Spaniards and Portuguese were present. The capital Paramaribo and the Central Suriname Nature Reserve are both placed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
Suriname is ... multi cultural with 38% East Indians, 31% creole (European - African), 15% Indonesians, 10% Bush Negroes (retribalised ex-slaves) and some Chinese and Amerindians. The official language is Dutch but Surinamese (a form of Creole) is used by all and English is widely spoken. Cultural diversity appeared to be more visible and freely expressed here than in neighbouring Guyana.

Es ist der wichtigste Transportweg in die Dörfer im Buschland. Über die Grenzflüsse Marowijne von Albina nach Französisch-Guyana und dem Corantijn von Nieuw-Nickerie nach Guyana gibt es Fährverbindungen.
