In 1512, shortly before Barbosu was in Gujarat, Surat is said to have been burnt by the Portuguese. Annoyed by the destruction of Surat, the Ahmedabad king gave order for building of a strong castle.(1546).

The strategic position of Surat on the most important sea routes between Europe, Arabia and the East was not lost on the European sea faring nations. The Portuguese were the first in to be followed by the British east India Company in 1602. The next couple of decades saw a great deal of fighting between the Portuguese and the British for control of Surat and its waters. The waters were made even bloodier with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company in 1620 and the French in 1624.
As prosperity of Rander declined in 16th century, on account of raids by Portuguese, Surat began to assume importance. The port of Surat enjoyed great prosperity in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. With rise of Bombay, it ceased to be a port of importance.

For centuries, Surat has been known as a center of trade and textiles. It was a major port during the Mughal period, and all powers including the Portugese vied for power of the port. From the 16th-19th century, the British, French, Portuguese and Dutch established factories in Surat. Today, Surat is known for it’s textiles, with thousands of weavers engrossed in making cotton, synthetic, silk and art silk textiles.
Surat was founded by Parsi refugees in the 12th century, and it emerged as a minor trading post during the 1500s when it was plundered and razed numerous times by the Portuguese. In 1592, after a protracted siege, the town fell to Akbar, under whose patronage, it became one of India's most prosperous mercantile capitals, as well as a key transit point for Muslims heading to Mecca.
Surat - Largest Saree Manufacturer in India In the year 1496, a Hindu trader called Mallik Gopi settled in Surat. According to the Portuguese chronicles, he was considered the governor of Surat but could not prevent the city from being looted at least seven times.
