The city of Surat is situated on the bank of river Tapi in the West Indian state of Gujarat. Surat was a great port city during the Mughal period. Since the ancient times, the ancient port of Surat has been famous for its exclusive quality fine silks and exquisite brocades and its trade in various spices. Surat has been one of the most progressive of India’s cities in the 17th and 18th centuries. In Mughal times, Surat was the major port from which pilgrims sailed to Mecca. Presently, Surat is a major industrial city with many textile mills.

Surat may be described as the diamond capital of India, and three-quarters of the world’s diamonds are given brilliance and sparkle by cutting and polishing in the city of Surat. The city is a port city located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Surat's infrastructure is tremendously improving. The city has recently seen the completion of a large number of road engineering projects, particularly the elevated roads, or flyovers in the diamond and textile zones of the city. This has significantly cut down on the commuting time for many commuters traveling to the diamond and textile districts. One of the very few "Multi - Layer Flyover's in India is under Construction in Surat, Its on the verge of completion. The Varachcha Flyover of Surat is India's longest flyover under city municipal limits in four lane category.

Surat is situated on the Western Coast of Gujarat, on the left bank of river Tapti, on the Gulf of Cambay (Khambhat). It has been a very important centre of trade and commerce. Although the city is considered ancient, being associated with the folklores of Lord Krishna, the present day Surat came to prominence during the medieval times. Previously, the nearby Rander, on right bank of Tapti, was the principal commercial centre south of Bharuch. Surat emerged with decline of Rander. By sixteenth century, Surat became an important city for its port and trade.

Surat is situated at the mouth of the river Tapi where it meets the Arabian Sea and has for centuries been a flood-affected area. The most recent floods ... were different because of the magnitude of their effect. Nearly 90 per cent of the households were affected; six of the seven wards of the city had water standing for days. It crippled the economy and affected people's coping abilities. In the wake of the floods the Department of Human Resource Development of the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and the Centre for Social Studies conducted a study looking at how people coped with the disaster and the impact of the flood on their lives and the economy. It offers some pointers about how the impact can be mitigated in similar situations in the future.

The port city of Surat is situated on the left bank of the Tapi River. It is known for its great survival instincts, having survived riots, plague, floods, and bounced back to prosperity each time. Today it is the hub for textile and diamond businesses. About 92 per cent of the world s diamonds are cut and polished here. The district is surrounded by Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari and Dang districts, and the Gulf of Cambay.
