Surat is a major gem stone center, and over 92% of the world's diamonds are cut here. The city is located on the banks of the Tapti River, and was a major port during the British colonial era. However, due to damming projects, the Tapti River become unnavigable and a new port was constructed down stream at the suburb of Hazira.

Now Surat has a City bus service called SMSS Service, which is one of the best City bus service in the country. On the 22nd of August the Bus service has been opend by the Mayore of the City Mr. Kanubhai Mavani. Privately operated auto rickshaws are overall fasility spread in the every part of the city. The city has recently seen the completion of a large number of road engineering projects, particularly the elevated roads, or flyovers in the diamond and textile districts of the city. This has significantly cut down on the commuting time for many commuters travelling to the diamond and textile districts.

Surat stands on the hanks of the River Tapti and was once one of western India's major ports and trading towns. Parsis first settled in Surat in the 12th century; they had earlier been centred l00km south in Sanjan, where they had fled from Persia five centuries before. In 1573 Surat fell to Akbar after a prolonged siege. It then became an important Moghul trading port and ... the point of departure for Mecca-bound Muslim pilgrims. Surat soon became a wealthy city. In 1612, the British established a trading factory, followed by the Dutch in 1616 and the French in 1664.Surat is no longer of any importance as a port, but it is a major industrial centre, especially for the manufacture of textiles and chemicals, and the processing and finishing of diamonds.
