Dumas & Hajira- Dumas 16 km from Surat and Hajira 28 km from Surat are well known health resorts on the creek of Arabian Sea. Hajira has two wells with water rich in iron and sulphur. The pleasant Hazira beach is fringed by feathery casurina trees.

A highlight of Surat is it’s proximity to some fine beaches-Hazira, Dumas and Dandi(where Gandhiji’s march ended) have pleasant sea shore spots to unwind, Ubhrat has a beautiful beach and the Maharajah of Baroda’s old mansion retreat. Tithal, Davier and the fine beaches of Daman Union territory are worth visiting over the weekend.

Surat finds mention in the logbooks of the merchants and sailors who sailed the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in search of trade and business opportunities in the 19th and 11th centuries. Some of the Arab sailors settled in the region around this time and the Tapi River grew into a major port for exports and as an important stopover for Muslim pilgrims bound for Mecca. In the late 1490s, a Hindu trader settled in Surat; his success attracted many other Hindu merchants who exported spices, silk, muslin and porcelain to Malacca, China and Sumatra in the Far East and became extremely prosperous as trade thrived.

The climate of Surat is mild due to its nearness to the Arabian Sea. There is not much change in the winter and summer temperature, which ranges between 10°C to 38°C. Although one can visit Surat in any season, the best time to do so would be between October and March.
