Supreme Ruler 2010

Part of what makes Supreme Ruler 2010 interesting is its near-future setting, which in many ways feels chillingly realistic. Worldwide economic chaos and the fall of the UN have left nations fragmented into smaller regions. While boundaries may have changed and economies collapsed, today's technologies and real-world economic principles still apply. You'll recognize familiar military units and have to deal with the sorts of domestic and foreign issues that challenge today's leaders. For an interesting twist, the game sports a fictional world power that is supposed to have risen in the place of the UN -- but it's more ready to intervene in any way necessary to get what it wants.

Managing a government in Supreme Ruler 2010 is not simply about commodities or military, but ... involves the Social and Financial Issues that must be faced. How much should you spend on Health Care? Law Enforcement? Education? What tax adjustments should you make that won't damage your economy or irritate your population? Should you issue bonds to raise your treasury or will the debt load be too great down the road?

Supreme Ruler 2020, the sequel to Supreme Ruler 2010, will use satellite imagery from NASA, according to developer BattleGoat. The game has players uniting a world of fractured states into a single, global empire with all aspects of a government.

To be frank: the graphics on Supreme Ruler: 2010 aren’t very impressive at all. The maps for all of the particular geographical regions are essentially low-resolution NASA satellite photos. The realism is there because this isn’t just an artist’s rendition of what a particular region or country looks like – this is the actual picture of it. At the same time... higher resolution images of the earth would have done them a whole lot better for those who are at higher screen resolutions, and don’t like to stretch 800x600 across their 20" monitors.
