In this semi-sequel to the first two "Superman" films, the classic hero returns to Earth after having been missing for six long years. What he finds astounds him - the world he knew has changed for the worse. In his absence, the forces of evil have regrouped like never before. Even Lex Luthor, once an outcast, has risen to the heights of power in Metropolis. Shooting of Superman Returns began during February 2005 in Australia, on locations that included a farm outside of the regional town of Gunnedah in North West NSW and Sydney. Other scenes were shot in various parts of the United States. The film was shot entirely on high-definition video using Panavision Genesis cameras. Singer said the first cut of the movie was 2 hours and 45 minutes.[14]

Em 2 de Maio de 2006, o trailer principal tornou-se disponível online [17]. Três dias depois, começou a ser exibido também nos cinemas, geralmente antes do filme Mission: Impossible III. Um segundo trailer começou a ser exibido antes do filme X-Men: The Last Stand em alguns países, incluindo algumas das cópias brasileiras. Superman Returns grossed $200,081,192 in the United States and an estimated $191 million internationally, taking in over $391 million worldwide by the time its theatrical run officially closed on November 2, 2006. Although a decent amount of money, it was more than disappointing for Warner Bros studios, who expected the film to make at least $500 million worldwide. It made $21,037,277 from its June 27, 2006 and June 28, 2006 screenings and $52 million in its first weekend, a rather fair amount, but it was quickly crushed in its second weekend by Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in the U.S, But kept a fairly steady gross in the UK..

Superman returns to Metropolis--and to Lois, who no longer has any doubts he is the real thing. Superman gets right back into action, quickly convincing Lex Luthor and Maggie Sawyer that he is the genuine article as well. Unfortunately, he still has to "reacquire" the rights to the name and symbol "Superman," but after helping the young Superboy comes to terms with his origins and accept the "Superboy" name, the kid graciously returns the rights to the Man of Steel.[53]
