The first adaptation of Superman was as a daily newspaper comic strip, launching on January 16, 1939. The strip ran until May 1966, and significantly, Siegel and Shuster used the first strips to establish Superman's backstory, adding details such as the planet Krypton and Superman's father, Jor-El, concepts not yet established in the comic books.[56] Following on from the success of this was the first radio series, The Adventures of Superman, which premiered on February 12, 1940 and featured the voice of Bud Collyer as Superman. The series ran until March, 1951. Collyer was ... cast as the voice of Superman in a series of Superman animated cartoons produced by Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios for theatrical release. Seventeen shorts were produced between 1941 and 1943. By 1948 Superman was back in the movie theatres, this time in a filmed serial, Superman, with Kirk Alyn becoming the first actor to portray Superman on screen.

It should be emphasized that the classification of the "Superman" character as a Methodist is in no way based on the fact that actor Brandon Routh, who played "Superman in the 2006 feature film, is a Methodist. This is simply an irrelevant coincidence. The most one could say about this is that director Bryan Singer sensed in Routh a person with the same vibe or essence that he felt when reading about Superman in the comic books. The identification of a comic book character's religious affiliation is never based on the religious affiliation of the actors who portray the character. Nor is the religious affiliation of the writers who chronicle the character's stories a determining factor, although it may be informative.

Superman started filming on March 24, 1977. It was shot simultaneously with Superman II, including eleven different units on location. The scenes of Krypton were shot at both Pinewood and Shepperton Studios. Smallville was shot on location in High River, Alberta while Metropolis was filmed in New York City. For scenes involving the Daily Planet, The New York Daily News was put in its place.[7] Filming was to remain very secretive as Christopher Reeve would have to literally walk in a bathrobe between shots as a means to not reveal the Superman suit to magazine spies/photographers. During the stressful shoot, tensions rose between the Salkinds and Donner as the two were barely speaking.

In 1939, Superman became the first character originating in comic books to anchor his own title. In 1940, he joined Batman in headlining World's Finest Comics. Before long, he made it into newspaper comics after all, syndicated by McClure (King Aroo, Hairbreadth Harry). He was ... featured in a weekly radio series, a movie serial, and a novel by author George Lowther. By the mid-1940s, his boyhood adventures were being recounted in the Superboy comic book series.

In addition, Superman's own mind can be turned against him. For instance, Lex Luthor, using lifelike android duplicates of the Flash and Batman as children, once successfully convinces Superman that he has found a way to reduce his age. Superman is subconsciously convinced enough that his body literally de-ages until he realizes the deception (Act Nos. 465-466, Nov 1976-Dec 1976: "Think Young and Die" and "You Can Take the Man Out of the Super, But You Can't Take the Super Out of the Boy").
