Superman is a comic book superhero, originally created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, and published by DC Comics. Created in 1932, and rejected by a number of publishers, the character first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938).

An influence on early Superman stories is the context of the Great Depression. The left-leaning perspective of creators Shuster and Siegel is reflected in early storylines. Superman took on the role of social activist, fighting crooked businessmen and politicians and demolishing run-down tenements.[26] This is seen by comics scholar Roger Sabin as a reflection of "the liberal idealism of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal", with Shuster and Siegel initially portraying Superman as champion to a variety of social causes.[27] In later Superman radio programs the character continued to take on such issues, tackling a version of the KKK in a 1946 broadcast.[28][29]

When America entered World War 11 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Superman's character evolved into a combat hero. He destroyed Nazi armor, Japanese submarines and everything else that was thrown at the Allies. In fact, the cover of a 1944 issue of Superman featured the Man of Steel throttling Hitler and Tojo by the collar.

Later 1996 - Kevin Smith's vision of Superman could be released by 1998! His story picks up with the ramifications of the Death of Superman, at the hands of Doomsday, and the effects on the entire DC Universe. His plans include the characters from the "Reign of Superman" and includes a visit to Hawkman's world of Thanagar. Kevin ... indicated that he was writing movies just to get into comics!
