Supergrass

The rest of "Supergrass" is a more textured and somber affair, beginning with its first (and best) track, "Moving." The song starts with a melancholy guitars/strings sweep and Coombes delivering an existential imitation of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. "I've been moving so long," he sighs. "The days all feel the same." Then it suddenly flips into chug-rock mode, and Coombes enthusiastically croons more depressing lyrics: "There's a low, low feeling around me, and a stone-cold feeling inside/I can't stop messing my mind up, or wasting my time ..." Repeat.

In 1997, Supergrass rose to the pressure of producing a follow-up with the magnificent In It For The Money, confirming their standing as one of the country's brightest new talents. The album displayed a heartening collection of good, melodic hooks, each song flowing into the next with assured energy. The opening title track was followed by the hard rock/surfin' "Richard III", which is how the Beach Boys might have sounded if they had plugged in their guitars. "Tonight" utilised a delicate coating of brass, while "Late In The Day" brought to mind piano-inspired Beatles. Derivative it may have been, but the album represented a highlight of the musical year, with the band hitting an early peak on an outstanding, polished pop collection.

For "Life On Other Planets", Supergrass decamped to France with esteemed producer Tony Hoffer. The band has described this as more of a bonding experience, than a writing experience. What emerges is a more applied effort than the last record. "Life On Other Planets" carries the same core values as previous 'grass albums. That means this record includes retro influences galore. "Life On Other Planets" starts rather spacey before opener "Za" kicks in. It's a suitably glam rock affair, with the chorus even containing the line "get it on". More T-rexery on the next tune "Rush Hour Soul", which has one of those Supergrass guitar lines that you can hum along to.
