Super Metroid

Super Metroid is going to get its fair share of attention out of the three games this week and it should. Super Metroid has never had a port or a remake and now you can get it for the low price of 800 Wii Points, if you’re in North America. Days after Sega announced it Shinobi III comes to the virtual console along with Neutopia, a Zelda clone made by Hudson. While Super Metroid is a must purchase, Shinobi III is quite good too. It is ... packaged in the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2, which is proving to be a much better deal if you want to play classic Genesis games that have nothing to do with Sonic.

With design/plot elements from the NES original, graphics reminiscent of the legendary Super Metroid, and the portability of Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission is a fantastic addition to the Metroid legacy. Sure, the lack of challenge makes the experience a short-lived one, but with the multiple endings and seriously enjoyable gameplay, it's easy to get some mileage out of the game through repeated playings. And of course, the inclusion of the original NES Metroid in its complete form (with the added option to save your game to the cart) is a great, great thing.
Super Metroid ... has some great, memorable bosses. Series’ mainstays Kraid and Ridley have been given complete make-overs from their initial Metroid debut (in the original 1986 NES game) and the new bosses and mini-bosses that were added fit very nicely in the Metroid canon. All bosses are massive and some can be quite difficult.
Super Metroid Box Super Metroid begins with a brief introduction that summarizes the ending of Metroid II: Return of Samus, in which bounty hunter Samus Aran tells of how she eradicated the Metroids from their home planet, SR-388. A Metroid larva had hatched from an egg and imprinted upon Samus, believing her to be its mother. She brings this larva to the Ceres Space Colony, where scientists discover that the powers of Metroids could be harnessed for the benefit of mankind. However, just after leaving the colony, Samus receives a distress call and returns to discover the larva stolen and the scientists dead. She encounters Ridley, who attacks her and then flies off with the stolen Metroid. Samus escapes the colony as it self-destructs and follows Ridley to planet Zebes, a Space Pirate base.
Super Metroid box art With Super Metroid, Nintendo took the non-linear exploration and platforming of the first two games in the series to lofty new heights. The game placed an even heavier emphasis on exploration as the key to advancement than the earlier games. Perhaps as a result of this, the game paved the way for what has been dubbed "sequence breaking," a method of play which ignores a game's intended order of progression. Super Metroid’s carefully structured environments, open-ended design, and optional power-ups allowed for multiple methods of advancement, which in turn allowed gamers to compete with each other for the fastest play through. Who could possibly refuse the reward for completing the game at a brisk pace? The brief congratulatory glimpse of a bikini-clad Samus was enough to stir the hearts of gamers everywhere into a frenzy.
Super Metroid power-ups Super Metroid is critically acclaimed and beloved by fans for good reason. It’s been heralded as the greatest game of all time by such respected magazines as Electronic Gaming Monthly, nabbing the coveted #1 spot on their “Best Games of All Time” list in issue #150. Once Samus lands on the planet Zebes and the gameplay starts, it’s easy to see why.
