[E]ver since Super Mario Land 2, the Mario sidescrollers have been gone, there have been no new Mario sidescrollers since. Now Wario came on the scene. The first Wario Land game released had a misleading name. "Super Mario Land 3" as it was called doesn't even feature Mario in it at all. The sequel to Wario Land came, Wario Land 2 was released. In a few months after Nintendo's Game Boy Color was released a "colorized" Wario Land 2 was released.

Released in 1989, Super Mario Land was one of the first games released for Game Boy (the good old fat one). This game is an anomaly in the Mario series. Instead of rescuing Princess Peach, you rescue Princess Daisy; and for some reason the main villain isn't Bowser, it's some random alien named Tatanga. These bizarre changes make the game look more like a fever dream than an actual Mario game.

Super Mario Land 2 takes place immediately after the original Super Mario Land. Wario has put an evil spell over Mario Land while Mario was away in Sarasaland, renaming the area Warioland. The inhabitants are now brainwashed into thinking that Wario is their master, and Mario is their enemy. Wario's motive behind this sudden attack was to take control over Mario's castle in order to have a palace of his own. In order to stop Wario, Mario must find the 6 Golden Coins throughout Mario Land to gain access to his castle. Mario eventually faces off against Wario inside his stolen castle and defeats him... reclaiming his castle and freeing Mario Land from Wario's hypnotic spell.

In Super Mario Land, the turtles, instead of letting you use their shells as weapons, blew up after landing on them. There were ... a good many new enemies. Your fireballs had a different flight pattern as well. Instead of just bouncing along the ground, they will just take one bounce and fly high into the air. You also get to drive a submarine in one of the levels, it's pretty cool.

Unlike all previous Mario games, Super Mario Land was not created by Shigeru Miyamoto. As a result, very few elements from this game reappeared in subsequent entries in the Mario series. All of the characters and worlds are very unusual by Mario standards. The only canon legacy of the game would prove to be Princess Daisy, who makes appearances in subsequent Mario games. Daisy was ... the name used for the female lead in the live-action film Super Mario Bros..

Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach took a vacation to the strange Dinosaur Land during the events of Super Mario World. Mario and Luigi went to Yoshi's house and read a letter saying that he and his friends had been kidnapped by Bowser, who ... made off with the Princess. The heroic plumbers immediately set out to save them, faced many strange new enemies along with their old foes, including the Koopalings (each of whom was guarding a captured Yoshi Egg).
