Eason wound up making history in Super Bowl XX, but it certainly wasn't anything he wants to remember. By the time he was replaced in the second quarter by veteran Steve Grogan, Eason had been all but driven back to Foxboro, Mass., by Chicago's unrelenting defense. He tried six passes and completed none. No previous starting Super Bowl quarterback had failed to complete a pass.

For the twenty seasons of the 1980s and 1990s, the NFC won sixteen Super Bowls. After the Oakland Raiders won Super Bowl XV to start the 1980s, the NFC went on to win 15 of the next 16 Super Bowls. The 1980s were dominated by the San Francisco 49ers, who won four Super Bowls in the decade (XVI, XIX, XXIII, and XXIV). The 49ers were led by coach Bill Walsh and quarterback Joe Montana and used the fast-paced west coast offense. Other highlights of the 1980s include the 1985 Chicago Bears who finished the season 18-1, and two championships for the Joe Gibbs-coached Washington Redskins.
