NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Sumner Redstone, the 84-year-old chairman of Viacom Inc., is the luckiest executive in the world. Come to think of it, he just may be the luckiest person on the planet -- and it's not because he is rich and famous and accomplished.

FasterCures President Greg Simon said, "We are overwhelmed by and deeply grateful for Sumner Redstone's generous gift. Four years ago, the Milken Institute created FasterCures to identify and remove the barriers that slow the search for cures across all diseases. This extraordinary gift will ensure that researchers, doctors and patients will have a strong ally in FasterCures in the fight to develop new medical solutions to improve the quality of life for millions of people in America and across the globe."

The Thornburgh/Boccardi Panel report does not disclose communications from Andrew Heyward, Betsy West, Dan Rather or others to Les Moonves and Sumner Redstone — a notable deficiency in the Panel’s work. It is inconceivable that Moonves and Redstone did not make inquiries into a story which was plastered all over page one of the major dailies, as well as leading the major news shows of competitors. The public needs to know what the most senior Viacom executives knew, and when they knew it.

Redstone says that collaboration between major media companies is a key component of the fight against piracy and intellectual property theft. He says that iTunes helped the music industry by creating a legal, affordable, instantly gratifying purchasing system for fans and that the challenge now is for the film industry to catch up and for competing companies to work together to establish new standards and practices. His digital manifesto ... calls for even wider use of “watermarked” content, which distinguishes between legitimate and pirated files, and for restrictions on the sale of both software and hardware tools that can be used for copyright infringement.

You better watch your step, Redstone. Because, first comes the "dis" in the premiere issue of Portfolio. Then comes the snide blind item insinuating that you're just another cheap-suit wearing billionaire crybaby. Which means the purportedly unbiased (yet largely unflattering) New Yorker profile can't be far behind.

The funds will ... support research and training in the Redstone Burn Center, which will be relocated and expanded. The new Burn Center will boost inpatient capacity, the quality of patient care and enhance the staff's ability to provide essential follow-up care on an outpatient basis.
