Sumner Redstone, the 82-year-old chairman of Viacom and CBS, may not use email, blogging, Twitter, or text messaging, but he does understand his business. During his keynote speech at Dow Jones and Nielsen's Media and Money conference, he unleashed a series of pithy quotes. On copyright: "If content is king, copyright is its castle." On YouTube: "Think about it: You cannot pay the rent posting videos on YouTube." The content mountain has officially relocated." [Forbes]

Sumner Redstone's ugly family feud with his daughter Shari just got uglier. Redstone faxed Forbes a letter insulting Shari (the vice chairwoman of both Viacom and CBS) and describing her as someone who "ignores the cardinal rule of good governance." Also, he reminds the magazine that he built up Viacom with "little or no contribution" on his children's part. Smooth. Forbes described Sumner and Shari's feud over Viacom's future; Shari's spokeswoman Nancy Sterling states it "is unfortunate that Sumner has chosen to publicize what Shari had hoped would remain a private family matter."

There's still a chance that Sumner Redstone may negotiate with his daughter to separate the theater business and run it under a different name, according to published reports. Some analysts say it could be more challenging without the colossal Redstone backing, which, because of its ties to CBS and Viacom, may have brought more opportunities. On the other hand, BU's Weinberg said Shari Redstone may have an easier time securing financing for improvement and upgrades to the theaters with her father -- and his reluctance to support the exhibition business -- out of the picture. Otherwise, it's likely the theater circuits will be sold off to one of its rival conglomerate exhibitors, according to industry executives.

At the Dow Jones and Nielsen Media and Money conference in New York today, Viacom and CBS chairman Sumner Redstone pulled out all the stops in defending the sanctity of copyright. "If content is king, copyright is its castle," he reportedly said. "Copyright compels creativity, it furnishes the incentive to innovate. If you limit the protection of copyright, you stifle the expression of self."
