Summoning is an epic black metal band from Vienna, Austria. Their style has been described as Tolkien black metal - not without reason, for the lyrics on most of the albums they have published yet deal with the mythological world of J. R. R. Tolkien. The notable exception being Stronghold, which takes its lyrical content from many of Tolkien's poems rather than directly from his novels.

Lyrically I’ve felt like Oath Bound is perhaps the most conceptual album Summoning has done yet. Would you agree with this, or have most of the previous ones been just as topical?

Moving away from their more standard black metal ranting on Lugburz, Summoning began to define and refine their signature sound with Minas Morgul. But for the most part the album is not the type of listening experience that would be found in later albums from this band. Though the album grows on you over the course of the disc, the first half is tedious at best to sit through. Musically the band's sound is moderately fleshed out: high end, trebly guitar lines, thundering, echoing drums, vocals flushed out with a ton of reverb and, yes, more echo, and folky keyboards. There is still a touch of the old black metal style within the music, as the speedier section of "Marching Homewards" demonstrates. But some of the music comes off as amateurish, haunted house music or repetitive new age music being influenced by little trolls who like to scare young girls.

Summoning was formed sometime in 1993 by Silenius (Michael Gregor), Protector (Richard Lederer) and Trifixion (Alexander Trondl). Before creating Summoning, Protector was playing drums in a kind of "old fashioned" thrash/death metal band Marlignom[1] and had embarked on a four year study of drums in music school. Silenius was in a doom metal band Shadow Vale (at 16 years old) and had a few years in music school studying piano. Before Summoning, Silenius was making music, together with Pazuzu (Ray Wells) in a band Cromm. Trifixion played in the band Pervertum.

Summoning was released on January 15th, 2008, after nearly a month of anticipation, suspense, and speculation. Prior to the update, Jagex released four Development diaries outlining some of the basic concepts behind Summoning: the development, various aspects of the skill, and several hints hidden between the lines. The skill itself is somewhat complex; in fact, it is significantly more complex than the average skill.
