Sulfur is extracted by mainly two processes: the Sicilian process and the Frasch process. The Sicilian process, which was first used in Sicily, was used in ancient times to get sulfur from rocks present in volcanic regions. In this process, the sulfur deposits are piled and stacked in brick kilns built on sloping hillsides, and with airspaces between them. Then powdered sulfur is put on top of the sulfur deposit and ignited. As the sulfur burns, the heat melts the sulfur deposits, causing the molten sulfur to flow down the sloping hillside. The molten sulfur can then be collected in wooden buckets.

Sulfur has been known and used as a pesticide since very early times, and has been registered for pesticidal use in the United States since the 1920s (8). It was first used around 1880 (4). Sulfur must have been well known to ancient peoples. They sometimes referred to it as brimstone. Sulfur sometimes occurs in bright yellow layers on the top of the earth. It has a sharp, offensive odor. When it burns, it gives off a strong, suffocating smell. The odor is like that produced when a match is struck.

Sulfur has been produced by one petroleum refinery in Union County for years. The source of the sulfur is gas freed at the refinery during the production of other petroleum products. Production capacity was rated at 10 long tons per day in 1960. In 1984, a company near Magnolia, Columbia County, began recovering sulfur during bromine extraction and continues today.

Sulfur research in other states has led to the development of several methods for extracting available sulfur from soils. The interpretation of these tests... continues to be a problem. Consideration of available sulfur from subsoil and atmospheric contributions may be necessary to accurately predict response to added sulfur fertilizer.
