Suicide is an enigmatic and disconcerting phenomenon. Because of others' inability to directly occupy the mental world of the suicidal, suicide appears to elude easy explanation. This inexplicability is stunningly captured by Jeffrey Eugenides in his novel The Virgin Suicides. In the novel, the narrator describes the reactions of several teenaged boys to the suicides of five sisters. The boys keep a collection of the dead girls' belongings, repeatedly sifting through them in a vain attempt to understand their deaths.
Suicide and self-injury are complex concepts, subject to differences of interpretation (10). Key questions are whether all (or nearly all) suicide and self-injury cases were coded to the categories reported, and whether other types of cases might have been coded to them. There is little direct evidence about the quality of Australian suicide data. Assessments of official statistics on suicide deaths in several comparable countries conclude that there was a moderate degree of under-counting, and few cases falsely counted as suicide (eg 11, 12, 13). Australian hospital data on "self-harm" for the year reported show signs of substantial differences of case inclusion criteria between jurisdictions.
Graph: Age-specific suicide rates 2005 Suicide rates in states and territories may fluctuate over time particularly in the smaller jurisdictions, because of the small number of suicides that may be registered annually. In addition, quality issues relating to delays in finalising coronial processes may ... vary across the jurisdictions. Therefore caution should be exercised when comparing annual state and territory suicide data (see Table 5).

Suicide rates for males aged 15 to 24 years were much lower than all-ages rates for most of the twentieth century (Figure 4). In recent years, rates for the young age group have been higher than the all-ages rate.
Dr. Madelyn Fernstrom Suicide is the act of taking one's own life. Thoughts (suicidal ideation) and attempts often precede suicide, allowing opportunity for prevention. Suicide among older adults is actually more common than suicide among teens and young adults.
Various countries have national journalism codes which range from one extreme of, "Suicide and attempted suicide should in general never be given any mention." (Norway) to a more moderate, "In cases of suicide, publishing or broadcasting information in an exaggerated way that goes beyond normal dimensions of reporting with the purpose of influencing readers or spectators should not occur. Photography, pictures, visual images or film depicting such cases should not be made public." (Turkey)[13] Many countries do not have national codes but do have in-house guidelines along similar lines. In the U.S. there are no industry wide standards and a survey of inhouse guides of 16 US daily newspapers showed that only three mentioned the word suicide and none gave guidelines about publishing the method of suicide. Craig Branson, online director of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE), has been quoted as saying, "Industry codes are very generic and totally voluntary.
