The Suicide Girls aren't your average fluffy porn stars. These dark, smart, edgy and alternative pin-ups with attitude have revolutionized porn by empowering its subjects, and a www phenomenon has been born. The Girls, from all over the world, launched a monthly magazine in May and just released a "coffee table" book in June. Even Playboy caught the buzz, creating a Suicide Girl of the Week feature on their website. Now the dark and sultry ladies have taken it on the road with their cross-country burlesque tour.

The rather popular adult content site Suicide Girls has one-upped Playboy by releasing two 100-shot packs of iPhone wallpapers. Available in safe-ish and not-so-safe-for-work versions, the free-to-download wallpaper packs (which we’ve obviously checked out for research purposes) contain enough variety of shots to float a very wide selection of boats.

A surprise grassroots phenomenon, the Suicide Girls have seen their popularity soar in the last few years. This post-feminist version of a burlesque group features confidant, individualistic women with piercings, dyed hair, tattoos, and sexy but unique bodies. The brand began life as a website and a book, and has subsequently blossomed into a national tour; in 2004, when this program--part documentary and part live performance--was filmed, the group performed 60 shows in 45 cities, and sold out nearly all of them. There's no full nudity here, though some of the girls are just a few strips of tape or spoonfuls of chocolate syrup away, and in their thoughtful interviews the girls make it clear that, far from being exploited, they're in this to have fun and show off. On a Suicide Girls-themed Livejournal community started by glitterbec, the 100-plus mostly female members discuss their favorite Suicide Girls. Female user Callisto wrote, "I like the underwear Elara is wearing in her sets. Does anyone know if those are for sale on the site?" The Livejournal members ... post photos of themselves to determine if others think they are "SG material."
