Sugar Ray: Sugar Ray Leonard
built 240 days ago
As a boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard was as good as it gets. He started boxing at 14, and a mere six years later, put seven awards on his fight card. He dreamed the dream, and his determination turned that dream into Olympic Gold at the 1976 Games in Montreal.

As a fighter, Sugar Ray Leonard had it all. He could box and he could punch. He was most identified by his blinding hand and foot speed. Leonard was versatile and capable of fighting effectively inside or outside. Along with that he possessed a great chin and had the heart and courage worthy of an all-time great fighter. Something else that he had an abundance of was ring savvy.

In November 1982, after consulting with doctors, friends and family, Sugar Ray invited Hagler and other boxing dignitaries to a charity event in Baltimore, Maryland. Standing in a boxing ring with ABC's Howard Cosell nearby, Leonard announced his retirement, saying a bout with Hagler would unfortunately never happen. Leonard maintained his eye was fully healed, but that he just didn't want to box anymore. In retirement, Leonard continued to be a commentator on HBO & CBS boxing contests, and performed other assignments for them. He ... did more endorsements.

Puerto Rican Wilfredo Benitez, himself a world champion since the age of 17, surrendered the WBC welterweight title in 1979, and Sugar Ray was on his way. The next seven years saw Leonard engage in some of the most famous battles in ring history with his three most famous rivals; Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns, Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran, and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. Duran was the victor in early 1980, taking the WBC crown after a brutal contest. However honor was restored later that same year, with the famous "No Mas" victory. Duran was out-boxed, out-sped, and humiliated and in the eighth round surrendered with the words "No Mas - No More".

Sugar Ray is a rock band from Orange County, California. The band formed in 1992 with the name Shrinky Dinx, later changing it to Sugar Ray after the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. Their debut album, Lemonade and Brownies, was released in 1995, though it failed to produce a major hit. Their early work was strongly influenced by funk metal, punk, alternative rock and straight up R&B, not a particularly fashionable combination at the time.
