Sugar Gliders: Animals
built 633 days ago
The sugar glider is one of a number of volplaning (gliding) possums in Australia. This remarkable ability to glide is achieved through a flap of loose skin which extends between the fifth finger of the hand to the first toe of the foot. The animal launches itself from a tree, spreads its limbs to expose the gliding membrane and directs its glide through subtle changes in the curvature of the membrane. The possum can glide for up to 100 metres.

If you think that your cat has really sharp teeth and nails, then you obviously have not yet met a sugar glider. Since sugar gliders are such small creatures that are meant to live in a natural habitat where they are constant prey to larger animals, it is no surprise that they have such sharp teeth and nails. Do they use them? Well, that really depends. Although most sugar gliders are not considered to be the most aggressive animals, there may be some situations in which they may feel afraid in their environment and use their teeth and nails as a means of protection. This can be a problem if you have pets or small children, who may not realize that they are causing a sugar glider to feel frightened.

In the wild, sugar gliders have a high energy diet that has a fairly high level of protein. In captivity, they should be offered a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and animal protein. Fruits and veggies can be fresh or frozen but not canned.
