Sudan is governed under the constitution of 1998 as amended. The executive branch is headed by a president, who is elected by popular vote for a term of no longer than nine years. The bicameral legislature consists of the 450-seat National Assembly and the 50-seat Council of States. Members of each branch are popularly elected to five-year terms. Administratively, Sudan is divided into 25 states.

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established under UN Security Council Resolution 1590 of March 24, 2005. Its mandate is to support implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and to perform functions relating to humanitarian assistance, and protection and promotion of human rights.
