The 49 NGOs remaining in Sudan, along with UN agencies and ICRC, are now under pressure to cover the shortfall. Some programmes belonging to the NGOs which withdrew are already being implemented by the remaining NGOs... reducing the impact of the withdrawal.

Personal baggage, including computers, is routinely searched on arrival to and departure from Sudan. The authorities will seize material deemed objectionable, such as alcohol or pornography, and may detain or arrest the traveler. Travelers intending to bring electronic items should inquire about entry requirements when they apply for a visa; restrictions apply to many devices, including video cameras, satellite phones, facsimile machines, televisions, and telephones. Travelers are not allowed to depart Sudan with ivory, some other animal products, or large quantities of gold.

There are substantial untapped deposits of copper and other minerals in Sudan. Chinese and French joint ventures export gold from the Red Sea Hills. Oil has now become the most important resource.

"Seasonal flooding is common in the summer in Sudan and the Horn of Africa, but the amount of rain could hit record levels this year," said Nathan Cooper of the American Red Cross. The Bishops ... took issue with a recent move to give Sudan a seat at the UN Security Council. They said Sudan's nomination was unacceptable "since GOS itself is a major cause of insecurity to its own people".
