The current population of the City of Sturgis is 6,682 people. Located six miles northeast of Sturgis on Highway 79 is "Mato Paha" or "sleeping bear mountain". It stands alone in the plains just beyond the Black Hills. Bear Butte is a holy mountain to the Sioux and Cheyenne who still make pilgrimages here. The State Park includes visitor center, buffalo herds and hiking trails to the summit.

Each year, in the third week of May, Sturgis serves as the kickoff city for Michigan Week. Many prominent political figures walk in the parade annually. These include State Representative from the 59th District Rick Schaffer, State Senator from the 16th District Cameron Brown, and 6th District U.S. Representative Fred Upton, the Ironman of the House. In the past, this has ... included the Governor of Michigan - John Engler had walked in the city's kickoff parade annually.

Back in 1983, the City of Sturgis decided to close the City Park to camping, and ... began Glencoe CampResort. What began as 40-60 acres of camping, has grown to over 1,000 full RV sites and more than 200 acres of tent camping.

Sturgis is located along Interstate 90 and US 14 in western South Dakota, about 30 miles west of Rapid City and 20 miles east of US 85 at Spearfish. South Dakota Highway 79 goes north, past Bear Butte State Park towards Newell and North Dakota, and SD Highway 34 heads east to the capital city of Pierre. US Highway 14A enters Sturgis through scenic Boulder Canyon from Deadwood.
