Stuart Appleby, whose round began at No. 10 North, was 1-over after four holes, then sped his way to the top of the leaderboard with six straight birdies to get to 5-under. The sixth birdie came at the 520-yard, par-5 first hole.
Stuart Appleby might be playing some of his best golf as he has started the season with three Top-8 finishes. His record at the Match Play is a bit spotty and has only gotten to Round Three once, which was in 2001. Tim Clark is playing nowhere near his best and has missed all three cuts this year. Last year was the first time Clark even got out of Round One and he isn't close playing at that level this year.
Stuart Appleby started the 2006 season in typical fashion by winning his third consecutive Mercedes Championship and collecting over a million dollars at the season opener. The victory gave the Aussie 7 wins on the PGA TOUR to go along with two international victories. In 2005, Appleby played himself into the top-30 on the money list for the 3rd consecutive year and was named to the international President's Cup team for the fourth time.
Appleby birdied the 18th and first holes to reach five-under par, but trouble loomed for the Australian. He bogeyed the par-five fourth to tumble down the leaderboard, but atoned for the error.

Under the terms of this multi-year agreement, Appleby will wear ECCO shoes exclusively during all on-course activities, appear at company functions and in the brand’s advertising and marketing initiatives. The 36-year-old Australian will ... display the ECCO logo on his shirt collar.
