Strontium: Strontium Carbonate
built 650 days ago
Strontium is recovered from two strontium minerals, strontianite (strontium carbonate) and celestite (strontium sulfate). The most common of these two minerals is celestite. Strontium minerals have not been mined in the United States since 1959. Consequently, U.S. companies import 100% of the strontium minerals needed for strontium. They are imported exclusively from Mexico. In addition, strontium compounds are imported from Mexico (90%) and Germany (9%) and 1% from other nations.

Strontium is only a dietary requirement in a few exceptional cases. A number of deep sea organisms apply strontium sulphate in shells, and stone corals ... have a requirement for the element. Plants contains between 3 and 400 ppm strontium (dry mass). Strontium is usually immobile in the environment, because of rapid precipitation as strontium carbonate, or because it is applied in shells. The highest strontium concentrations are found in deserts and forest soils.

Strontium carbide, SrC2, is obtained by heating strontium carbonate with carbon in the electric furnace. It resembles calcium carbide, decomposing rapidly with water, giving acetylene. Strontium carbonate, SrCO 3, found in the mineral kingdom as strontianite, is formed when a solution of a carbonate is added to one of a strontium salt. It is an amorphous solid, insoluble in water, but its solubility is increased in the presence of ammonium nitrate. It loses carbon dioxide when heated to high temperature.
Strontium nitrate Sr(NO3)2 is mixed with carbon and sulfur to make red fire for use in fireworks, flares, and signal shells. Strontium chlorate, Sr(ClO3)2 can be used for the same purpose. One mineral form of strontium is a crystalline form of strontium sulfate called celestite. Others include the carbonate minerals strontianite and Weloganite.
Strontium is water insoluble, but it does react with water. Strontium compounds can be water soluble. Examples include strontium carbonate with a water solubility of 10 mg/L, and strontium chromate with a water solubility of 9 mg/L.
