Set in 1958 and adapted from the award-winning stage play by Julie Jensen, Stray Dogs is a Southern gothic film about the last night of a bad marriage. Darla Carter reaches her turning point this October day, when most of the men in her Appalachian town are engaged in a vicious, chaotic hunt to round up and kill stray dogs. In the afternoon, Darla gets terrifying news: she is pregnant again, and she believes the baby will be a girl. Legend has it that female children cannot survive on Carter Mountain. Darla has lost three female infants in a row, and has come to believe the curse is real. For the sake of her children's future, she resolves to leave her husband and Carter Mountain once and for all.

The 125th, now commonly referred to just as "The Stray Dogs", return to duty, this time in Central Asia where they are quietly placed under the WC Asian Central Command and stationed in Afghanistan. Late in the year hostilities flare up between Red Star forces in south western China and Coalition forces across the border in occupied Pakistan when Red Star Alliance forces attempt to annex several hundred square kilometers of disputed Pakistani real estate in an attempt to gain control of resources in the area. The WC Central Mountain Division falls back, seemingly surrendering the territory, and the Chinese advance in to occupy it. However, the Stray Dogs hit the exposed northern flank of the Red Star advance, devastating their core armored and air support units, cutting off the main body of the occupying force, thereby isolating them from the Chinese border and their support and supply lines. Coalition Command then quietly demands a retreat recognizing the Coalition right to the territory and surrendering any claim to it, holding the isolated Chinese army as hostage. Weeks later the treaty is signed and the Red Star forces allowed to return home, the territory now established as Western Coalition. This would mark the effect of the Stray Dogs on the Frontlines of the battlefield.

Stronger still, though, is the influence on Stray Dogs of Vittorio de Sica's The Bicycle Thief, the film that in the end directly inspires the children's ill-fated criminality. Both films could be described as neo-realist, both are set in a background of post-war hardships, and both end tragically (albeit rather differently) with the theft of a bike and a subsequent arrest. Yet offsetting the devastating bleakness of the sequence with which Stray Dogs closes is a final line that, for all its naïveté... resounds with a note of near triumphant defiance. Like her dog, Gol-Ghotai may not understand the awful world around her, but there is something in her spirit that seems indomitable, giving hope where hope is in very short supply.

The Gardner Museum presents an exhibition of drawings by Croatian-born artist Danijel Zezelj, from his graphic novel Stray Dogs, which he started while in residency at the museum in the spring of 2004. Stray Dogs takes form as the memoir of a woman journalist. Part illustrated biography, part dreamlike musing, Zezelj’s richly descriptive narrative-in-drawings is told through a visually eclectic mix of individuals and settings, from moody cityscapes to shadowed interiors. His story takes on themes of exile, solitude, illness, displacement, and growing old in America. Merging a quasi-documentary style with darkly poetic and musicalsensibilities, Stray Dogs explores the meaning of place in human experience. Zezelj’s project is a boldly impressionistic representation of the world as he sees it.

Stray dogs are a problem in Athens. Not because they will attack you or chase you through the city streets. It is mostly an image problem. You have this big modern city and wandering around, lounging in the shade, solo and in packs, are dogs. Some are pets, some are former pets and some have never been pets at all.
