Stonewall Riots: June
built 180 days ago
The Stonewall Riots are regarded as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. Marches are held in many cities each year at the end of June to commemerate this historic event. The Stonewall Riots stand for oppressed people demanding to be treated as human beings, as the Constitution of the United States promises.

No queer history lesson is complete without the story of the Stonewall riots. On a hot summer night in June 1969, plainclothes police did their usual raid of the bar, but fed-up queens fought back, kicking off the gay activist movement. Stonewall remains a welcoming watering hole for leather- and feather-clad comrades in arms. Located right at the beginning of Rainbow Row, this former garage feels eternally glam with multicolored party lights, six disco balls and tunes like "These Boots Are Made for Walking" coming out of the speakers. The all-ages crowd is mostly male, but anyone's welcome, and don't miss the nightly events, like Monday bingo, Wednesday karoake, and Friday's Red Light District party.

Immediately following the Stonewall riots of June 27th 1969, a series of demonstrations and conversations went on that gave birth to the modern Gay movement. In his book, The Gay Militants (New York: 1971) Donn Teal reproduced verbatim some of the early flyers which where handed out, on the street and at conferences. They show both an intense immediate awareness of the historic turning point for gays and lesbians and reveal real attempts to engage in analysis as well as protest.

That same year, a new organization decided to plan and organize a traditional street festival in the month of June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. Pride of Greater Ft. Lauderdale was created, and in June 2000 the inaugural Stonewall Street Festival and Parade took place in Wilton Manors. The Stonewall Street Festival, with a parade and booths along Wilton Drive, and no admission charge, was a smaller neighborhood festival reminiscent of early Pride celebrations. It has continued each year since.
Heritage of Pride is a non-profit organization that organizes LGBT Pride events in NYC to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. Get more info on their annual Pride Week events, running June 19th through 26th.
