Stonewall Riots: Greenwich Village

The following year, in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, the GLF organized a march from Greenwich Village to Central Park. Between 5,000 and 10,000 men and women attended the march. Many gay pride celebrations choose the month of June to hold their parades and events to celebrate รข€œThe Hairpin Drop Heard Round the World " (D'Emilio 232). Many major cities including New York City , Chicago , Houston , San Francisco , Seattle and Minneapolis hold Gay Pride Marches on the last Sunday of June, in honor of Stonewall. The prominent British gay rights group Stonewall is named after the riots.

The Stonewall riots were not organized by any particular group. The leading homosexual political organization in operation was the Mattachine Society of New York (MSNY), which had had some real successes in the past (for instance in legalizing gay bars) by using legal and reformist techniques. But 1969 was ... the height of the "Movement", the conglomeration of anti-Vietnam War, pro-Black, pro-Women, pro-Hippy, anti-Capitalist left-wing politics which formed an entire counter-culture in the late 1960s'. A number of Gay men and women were very influenced by the Movement and were able to use its resources - including Alternate U., a sort of general radical "university". Lesbian, gay, Bisexual Pride Events are held to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, marking the first time that gays fought back physically against police harassment and entrapment. The Stonewall Riots occurred on June 27 - 29, 1969 outside the Stonewall Bar in Greenwich Village. These riots are considered responsible for initating the modern queer liberation movement world wide. Pride Week seeks to publicize the successes and struggles for equality by the queer community.

Years have now passed since the Stonewall riots. Even when they happened, not everyone agreed that they were riots. The New York Times dismissed them as a "rampage," a 45-minute "melee" (June 29, 1969, page 33). In the Times' second coverage the melee became a "near-riot" (June 30, 1969, page 22). Of the straight papers only The Village Voice took what happened half-seriously. The Voice had to; their offices were half a block from the Stonewall.

There have been many different views and ideas concerning the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which, as a whole, are often referred to as the Stonewall Rebellion. Nowadays, perhaps one of the most common viewpoints is that the Stonewall Riots were a turning point in homosexual history, an axis that opened opportunities for many more gay rights and liberation movements. There were only a few supportive gay societies and groups before the riots (for example, the Mattachine Society), and little was actually done to gain rights other than small speeches until after that late night in Greenwich Village, New York.
