Stewart Cink: Pga Tour
built 187 days ago
Cink has become one of the most consistent players on Tour and the big question now is whether the 31-year-old can add a Major to his CV. He came mightily close at the 2001 US Open when losing out in agonising circumstances. Feeling his chance had gone, Cink rushed a short putt and missed. Had he holed it he would have got into the play-off with Retief Goosen and Mark Brooks. That is in his past now and Cink, the number one player on the putting stats in 2004, could well emerge as a strong contender this week. He's a Georgia native and has built up a solid bank of Augusta experience with five finishes inside the top 28 in seven starts.

Cink will enjoy the shortest commute of anyone in the field. Last year, he and wife Lisa completed their new home on a fairway at TPC at Sugarloaf. Prior to that he had lived in Smyrna since graduating from Georgia Tech. Cink is a member of Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club, site of the 1998 and 2000 TOUR Championship.

Cink is in the World Cup for the second straight year, this time teaming with J.J. Henry in the final World Golf Championships event of the season, which starts Thursday. Six other American players ahead of Cink in the world golf rankings declined invitations, but the four-time PGA Tour winner happily agreed to play.

Cink shot under par in all four rounds which resulted in his first top five finish of 2007. He had been 149th in Driving Accuracy this year, but he surprised this week by being T-20 for the tournament in this key statistic. He is scheduled to play next week at The Players where his best finish was a T-22 in 2004.

Cink has reason to be optimistic, too, as he seeks his first major championship title. He played well at Medinah in the 1999 PGA Championship, tying for third. Not to mention, he has ... posted three top-five finishes in his last five starts.
