All square through nine holes, Cink sunk four birdies on the back while Monty played each hole to par. This victory avenges Cink's loss to the Scot at this event in 2004. He moves on to face Angel Cabrera in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Sabbatini was the only player to give Cink a scare, making a 20-foot birdie on the 14th hole to get to 8 under, just two shots behind. But the diminutive South African bogeyed two of the next three holes to fall back, and Cink was solid over the last eight holes.

"He came to me and said some pretty serious things," Cink said. "I don't want to go into it in detail but he said, 'The 17th hole is driving me nuts.' I said, 'Why don't you call this guy? He can help calm your fears and help you understand them and he might do you some good.' "
