Steve Wozniak, the nerd soul of Apple Computer, is the last person one would think of as a classically embittered co-founder. Which lends credibility to his account of Apple Computer's first years. Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, has always implied that he, not only provided the marketing genius behind the computer maker's early success... helped Wozniak engineer the first Apple computers. Nearly thirty years later, Wozniak sets the record straight in a new biography:

Actually Steve Wozniak is shaping up to be a pretty great guest! Stephen will ... probably like the fact that Steve is short for Stephen, not Steven, and Steve’s new book iWoz might even give Stephen a second chance at becoming the dominant sales-affecting force on Amazon.com! Expected Nail Factor? 2! Then again, Steve Wozniak has a beard. Stephen doesn’t trust men with beards.
All his life, Steve Wozniak has loved projects that require him to think. In sixth grade, he built his own amateur radio station and earned a ham-radio license. At age 13, he built his first computer, and in high school, he was president of the electronics club.

Steve Wozniak, famed co-founder of Apple and garage electrical engineer, has come out of “semi-retirement” to start up his own company. He calls it “Wheels of Zeus” … “wOz” for short. “The Woz” has been promoting music and arts since he quit his days at Apple. He has been behind the scenes in a few electronics projects, such as Danger Research, but this is the first time he has come out in full force with a new design of his own since his days with Apple. The device the new company will produce remains a mystery. The only information circulating through the online press is a few vague quotes:

By early 1976, Steve Wozniak had completed his 6502-based computer and would display enhancements or modifications at the bi-weekly Homebrew Computer Club meetings. Steve Jobs was a 21 year old friend of Wozniak's and ... a visitor at the Homebrew club. He had worked with Wozniak in the past (together they designed the arcade game "Breakout" for Atari) and was very interested in his computer. During the design process Jobs made suggestions that helped shape the final product, such as the use of the newer dynamic RAMs instead of older, more expensive static RAMs. He suggested to Wozniak that they get some printed circuit boards made for the computer and sell it at the club for people to assemble themselves. They pooled their financial resources together to have PC boards made, and on April 1st, 1976 they officially formed the Apple Computer Company.
"Steve Wozniak deserved to be considered Apple's number 1 employee. From a technical standpoint, Woz literally was Apple Computer." 1 This line, taken from Accidental Empires, just about sums up what Steve Wozniak was all about. In the early days of computing Wozniak, or "Woz" as he is more popularly known, embodied a new way of thinking, far removed from the world of mainframes and minicomputers that dominated the industry back then. He knew the computer could play a part in the lives of the average householder, and that a new era of more personal computing was on its way. Woz eventually defined what a personal computer should be back in 1977, when he single handedly designed and built the Apple II.
