During the late-1960s, Winwood and Mason became close friends of Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix first heard "All Along the Watchtower" at a party he was invited to by Mason; they recorded the Hendrix version later that night in a London recording studio. Winwood actually only appeared on one track of Electric Ladyland, "Voodoo Chile". Most of the Organ work is Mike Finnigan.

By the age of 16, Winwood had played on stage in clubs with many influential Blues artists of the time, namely; John Lee Hooker, Sonnyboy Williamson, Champion Jack Dupree, T-Bone Walker, and Memphis Slim. He ... had played studio sessions with Muddy Waters, BB King, and Howling Wolf during this time. In 1967, he played Hammond organ on Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child." The sixties were an era when musicians adhered to the school of jamming, playing for fun after hours with whomever happened to be in town or were just passing by.

Winwood collaborated again with former Traffic bandmate Jim Capaldi on "One and Only Man" for his 1990 collection, Refugees of the Heart. The two would reunite under the Traffic moniker in 1994 to release Far From Home, which was followed by a subsequent world tour.
