Don't get it twisted; Steve Harvey is not corny, he's country. Take it from Wendy Raquel Robinson, who worked alongside the comedian for six years. Having taped on the set of The Steve Harvey Show from 1996 to 2002, Robinson has profound memories and closeness to a motivated individual whose candid, spontaneous personality bestowed pleasure amongst those he worked with. "Principal Regina 'Piggy' Grier" was fortunate to get to know the 'teddy bear' beneath the act, behind the voice, and before the jokes. The Steve Harvey Show was a huge success. What was Steve like on a day-to-day set?

David Brancaccio interviews actor, comedian, and social critic Steve Harvey. Harvey, who hosts a syndicated radio show called The Steve Harvey Morning Show, gives his take on important issues, including values, religion, and personal responsibility. "It's difficult, man, to just try to do the right thing," he says. "But the right thing is really the best way it's done." Harvey is about to release a new film of a stand-up concert he gave at a four day Evangelical event, where he brought the house down taking on faith, family and relationships.

Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid 1980s, eventually leading to a long stint as host of It''s Showtime at the Apollo, succeeding his friend Cedric the Entertainer in that role. His success as a stand-up comedian led to The WB network giving him his own show, The Steve Harvey Show, which ran from 1996 to 2002. While wildly popular in the African-American community (the show won multiple NAACP Image Awards), the show never achieved critical acclaim outside of the African-American community, a matter about which Harvey has often complained.

It was one in the morning on July 19, 1997, and Steve Harvey was feeling good. Earlier that evening, his son Wynton had entered the world. From Harvey's vantage point, Wynton's birth nicely capped off ten years of hard work. A decade earlier, shortly after he'd left his first wife and children, Harvey lived out of his 1976 Ford Tempo for a year, traveling across the United States in his quest to become a professional comedian.
Harvey has been compared to legend, Richard Pryor and these comparisons are well deserved. Harvey’s wry wit, dead-on observations, and painfully true assessments of human nature add up to one very funny comedian. If you’re looking for a laugh, chuckle and sidesplitting howl, take a trip with Steve Harvey.
