Steroids: Athletes
built 627 days ago
Steroids may give kids the sense that they're stronger and more athletic, but the consequences are too dangerous to risk. Help kids stay away from steroids by encouraging healthy eating and fitness habits that will help them feel well prepared for competition.

Nobody knows how many athletes abuse anabolic steroids. Relatively few professionals ever get caught red-handed, but it's widely believed that many take the drugs in secret. For instance, football players and other athletes could easily take the drugs during the off-season without fear of detection. When major league baseball started widespread testing for steroids for the first time in 2003, roughly 5 percent of players came up positive.

Today, athletes and others abuse anabolic steroids to enhance performance and ... to improve physical appearance. Anabolic steroids are taken orally or injected, typically in cycles of weeks or months (referred to as "cycling"), rather than continuously. Cycling involves taking multiple doses of steroids over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, and starting again. In addition, users often combine several different types of steroids to maximize their effectiveness while minimizing negative effects (referred to as "stacking").

Most data on the long-term effects of anabolic steroids on humans come from case reports rather than formal epidemiological studies. From the case reports, the incidence of life-threatening effects appears to be low, but serious adverse effects may be under-recognized or under-reported. Data from animal studies seem to support this possibility. One study found that exposing male mice for one-fifth of their lifespan to steroid doses comparable to those taken by human athletes caused a high percentage of premature deaths.(8)

It's been rumored, yet undocumented, that the Germans injected their Nazi soldiers with anabolic steroids. Pharmaceutical companies began doing experiments on humans and developing synthetic versions of testosterone. The substances soon found their way into athletic competitions, which has continued despite efforts to outlaw and curb their use.

High school athletes who either feel they’re not quite big or fast enough to become a starter or earn a coveted college scholarship are tempted to turn from effective steroid alternatives to the quick fix steroids can provide. They might not be able to acquire the designer steroids allegedly preferred by professional athletes, but steroids such as Deca-Durabolin, Human Growth Hormone and Pro Turinabol are readily available across the border, and not all that expensive.
