Sterling Marlin, a 10-time winner in NASCAR Nextel Cup, and Joe Nemechek, a four-time winner in NASCAR Nextel Cup, have become victims of the sport's youth movement. Marlin, 50, and Nemechek, 44, were released from Ginn Racing despite the fact that both drivers kept their respective teams in the top 35 in Nextel Cup owner's standings throughout the first-half of the season.

Sterling Marlin will have to go to a backup car after things took a turn for the worst in the Gatorade Duel event. Marlin was involved in an incident under caution damaging the #14 Waste Management Chevrolet, forcing the team to a backup car for Sunday's Daytona 500. Marlin had a strong performance in Thursday's first of two Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races, starting eighth and running as high as fourth several times. Then on Lap 58 of 60, the caution flag waved, setting up a green-white-checkered restart. As Marlin followed the field across the start-finish line for the final caution lap, he was caught off guard as several other racecars slowed to avoid debris and the result was a wrecked racecar. Marlin scored two victories early in the 2002 season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway. He led the points standings for 25 straight weeks before his championship run was cut short by a neck injury in a crash at Kansas Speedway. He was forced to miss the rest of the season due to the injury. His replacement, rookie Jamie McMurray, won the fall Charlotte race in is second start. Marlin called the victorious McMurray on national television minutes after the stunning win, congratulating McMurray and the team in prime-time television. Marlin finished 18th in the final standings despite missing the final seven races.
