Stephen Frears: Starting a film is like jumping off a cliff. It's like a sort of therapy in an odd sort of way. It always seems to be like going into the unknown. You never quite know where you're going towards. And afterwards you think, "Oh, I say, I was interested in that for these reasons." It slowly emerges, you slowly work out why you were drawn to that.

Stephen Frears has nothing to be nervous about. Dame Judi Dench, who portrays Mrs. Laura Henderson, is a strong Oscar contender for Best Actress. Bob Hoskins co-stars, and the ensemble cast includes the inimitable Christopher Guest, and British pop star Will Young. Frears' crew for Mrs. Henderson Presents-a homage to Hollywood musicals and screwball comedies-includes the five-time Oscar-nominated composer George Fenton and Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell. The true story of a British aristocrat who bought a London theatre at the height of World War II, this musical comedy vibrates to the rhythm of wartime melodies, snappy dialogue, and smart, naughty women. From the old-fashioned overture to the closing production number, Mrs. Henderson Presents showcases Frears' sheer virtuosity.

The masterly Stephen Frears said in a BBC Radio 4 show over the weekend that his next movie should be about Elvis. He's expecting the script in a few days. "If God is smiling, it will be as good as I hope it will be. The Elvis Presley Estate says it's the best script they've ever read. It gets him right in a very, very eccentric way."

Stephen Frears: This city [Berlin] used to be divided. There was a communist sector and a capitalist sector. Clearly capitalism won. It is, in its own way, tragic. You want a lecture on capitalism. Yes, they sell sex, it's shocking.
