john edwards LIVES in this Presidential hopeful Stephen Colbert, who has declared that Doritos chips are supporting his campaign, was recently the target of populist John Edwards’ sole campaign tactic: That everyone except John Edwards takes donations from evil corporations. In response to South Carolina’s “Favorite Son” campaigning in Columbia Sunday, Edwards spokeswoman Teresa Wells tried to make a meta-funny:

WASHINGTON - Stephen Colbert was denied when he tried to run for president this year in South Carolina. Now the fake TV pundit is getting some love from the city of his birth.
Colbert at Knox College On September 11, 1974, when Colbert was ten years old, his father and two of his brothers, Peter and Paul, were killed in the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 while it was attempting to land in Charlotte, North Carolina. They were en route to enroll the two boys at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut.[8][13] Shortly thereafter, Lorna Colbert relocated the family downtown to the more urban environment of East Bay Street in Charleston. By his own account, Colbert found the transition difficult and did not easily make new friends in his new neighborhood.[7] Colbert later described himself during this time as detached, lacking a sense of importance regarding the things with which other children concerned themselves.[14][12] He developed a love of science fiction and fantasy novels, especially the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, of which he remains an avid fan. During his adolescence, he ... developed an intense interest in fantasy role-playing games, especially Dungeons & Dragons,[15][14] a pastime which he later characterized as an early experience in acting and improvisation.[2]
Previously, Colbert has raised proceeds for other charities including DonorsChoose.org and Save the Children. During his Presidential bid to get on the South Carolina ballot, Colbert asked his viewers to contribute to DonorsChoose.org which benefits schools in South Carolina. The on-air mention raised $59,000 in 10 days and reached 13,000 public school students in South Carolina. In 2006, Colbert celebrated his one-year anniversary by auctioning off on eBay his famous on-set portrait featuring a regal Stephen Colbert standing in front of a portrait of a regal Stephen Colbert. The portrait garnered an impressive $50,000 for Save the Children. Currently, the third season portrait hangs in the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Colbert confirmed his presidential ambitions on his October 16, 2007 show,[30] stating his intention to run both on the Republican and Democratic platforms, but only as a "favorite son" in his native South Carolina. In an interview with Larry King he revealed that he would consider Mike Huckabee (who himself has offered Colbert the vice presidential position) as his running mate.[31] He ... speculated on the possibility of a Colbert-Putin or Colbert-Colbert ticket. Colbert abandoned plans to run as a Republican due to the $35,000 fee required to file for the South Carolina primary. On November 1, 2007, it was announced that he would not appear on the Democratic primary ballot either, after being deemed ineligible by the South Carolina Democratic Party executive committee.[32] Several days later he announced that he was withdrawing from the race, saying that he did not wish to put the country through an agonizing Supreme Court battle.[33]
The NYT endorsement of Stephen was different but effective. Simply turn over an op-ed column to the dark horse testing the waters. Thank you, dowdy Maureen. The Times did the same for another old boy from the South, Jimmy Carter, and his campaign, like Colbert̢۪s, took flight. Carter and Stephen both talk to God. (The same god?) They both know the Word.
