Steffi Graf is a WWF Ambassadress and in 1998 she founded her own foundation "Children for tomorrow", which helps mentally and emotionally traumatised children. During the first half of the 1990s she and Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario had one of the more exciting rivalries in tennis, with Graf emerging as the stronger player. Graf retired in 1999. The same year she began a relationship with tennis star Andre Agassi; they married in October 2001 and have two children.

Known for consistency, not for surprises, German tennis star Steffi Graf shocked everyone last week when she abruptly announced her retirement from the sport. Explaining her decision to quit just weeks before the U.S. Open, the 30-year-old Graf said simply that in recent weeks, "for the first time, I wasn't feeling pleasure or joy." But it was never an easy life. Plagued by injuries throughout her 17-year career, Graf ... had her share of personal troubles. Most recently, her father, who was also her manager, served at least two years in jail for tax evasion. But the woman who was as famous for her icy demeanor as she was for her powerful forehand never talked about that--or much else.

During her 17 years as a professional tennis player, Steffi Graf won 22 grand slams, more than 100 WTA singles titles and an Olympic gold medal. As icy cool in her personal life as in her game, for years she had only had one focus: tennis. But now retired, she has found love, motherhood and married life with with fellow athlete Andre Agassi. It seems the tennis star who once said, "Nothing gives me those highs like playing tennis does," has found a new kind of happiness off the courts.
Steffi Graf was born on June 14, 1969 in Bruehl, West Germany. Steffi started playing tennis at the age of 6. Her father Peter sold his business and started his own tennis school where her coached Steffi. Her mother Heidi was a tennis player too. At 13, she became the youngest player ever to win the West German 18-and-under championship. She was the 3rd woman in history to win a true grand slam, taking the Australian, French, U.S. and Wimbledon singles titles.
