Steffi Graf has won a court appeal in Cologne against Microsoft Germany over fake nude photos of her that appeared on web pages hosted by the company. However, the decision, if media reports are accurate, gives cause for concern.

At the start of her first full professional season in 1983, the 13-year-old Graf was ranked No. 124. She won no titles in the next three years, but her game improved consistently and her ranking climbed steadily to No. 98 in 1983, No. 22 in 1984, and No. 6 in 1985. In 1984, she first gained international attention when she almost upset the #10 seed, Jo Durie of the United Kingdom, in a fourth round Centre Court match at Wimbledon. In August, she represented West Germany in the tennis demonstration event at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and won the event.

Graf was a member of the German Fed Cup team for 7 years (1986-'87, '89, '91-'93, '96). She has Germany's record of most final wins (3-0), leading Germany to victory in 1987 and 1992. Her father Peter, a car and insurance salesman, was an aspiring tennis coach who began teaching her to swing a racket in the family's living room. She was on a court at four, in her first tournament at five and taking lessons at six.
