Stefanie Maria Graf was born on June 14, 1969, to Peter and Heidi Graf in Mannheim, Germany. Her father supported the family by selling cars and insurance and took up coaching tennis to earn some extra income. After Steffi revealed an interest in the game, Peter gave her a wooden racket and the two began hitting a ball around the living room. She progressed quickly, playing her first tournament aged five – it proved a frustrating experience... and she left the court in tears after being defeated.

In 1990, Graf defeated Mary Joe Fernández in the final of the Australian Open, which was her eighth Grand Slam singles title in the last nine she contested. Her winning streak (unbeaten since the 1989 French Open loss to Sanchez Vicario) continued with victories at Tokyo, Amelia Island, and Hamburg. At Berlin, she extended her unbeaten streak to 66 matches (second in WTA history to Navratilova's 74) before losing the final to Seles.

This song isn't really about Hugh's love for Steffi Graf. It's about Gunter Parche, the guy who became so obsessed with Steffi Graf that he stabbed Monica Seles to maintain Steffi's number one spot. So really this song is quite edgy and to think Hugh Laurie was supposed to be the fluffy half of a "A Bit of Fry and Laurie."

Seles was Graf's main rival in the early '90s. She did win 9 Grand Slams, and she did miss two years of tennis after being stabbed by a crazed fanatic. But Graf has a 10-5 advantage head-to-head. Seles has been ranked #1 for the 4th most weeks, but still only 1/3 of Graf's total. She won 3 or more Grand Slams in a year twice compared to Graf's 5 times, and reached 6 consecutive Grand Slam finals, 7 short of Graf's record of 13. Seles has won and successfully defended 3 of the four Grand Slams (comared to all four for Graf), but has never won Wimbledon even once, wheras Graf has won all four at least 4 times each.
