Steffi Graf: Australian Open
built 605 days ago
Robust, magnetic appeal draws Steffi Graf and André Agassi together. Passion and compassion fuse. The force of fantasy is strongly at work/play here. You two can share a strange openness. Quick inspiration, potent psychic vibrations, and stimulating spirits give this relationship a major romantic lift. On the other hand, Steffi Graf could find that André Agassi is more promise than delivery.

With or without a player to push her more, Graf kept piling up victories. She won at Wimbledon twice more, in 1995 and 1996; at the U. S. Open twice more, in 1995 and 1996; and at the French Open three more times, in 1995, 1996, and 1999. She ... won the Australian Open for a fourth time in 1994.

While the Berlin tournament was being played, the largest-circulation German tabloid, Bild, ran a story about Graf's father allegedly having an affair with a former Playboy model. The subsequent paternity suit brought by the model, Nicole Meissner, was covered extensively in the tabloids for the next two months. The difficulty of answering questions about the matter came to a head at a Wimbledon press conference, where Graf broke down in tears. Wimbledon authorities then threatened to immediately shut down any subsequent press conferences where questions about the issue were asked. The blackmail scheme eventually failed when DNA tests proved Peter was not the baby's father. Whether this scandal affected Graf's form is open to debate.

With her loss in the semifinals of the French Open earlier this month, STEFFI GRAF had been beaten in five Grand Slam tournaments in a row. Her confidence was shot, she admitted.

By the time the U.S. Open came around, scarcely anyone doubted that Graf would romp. Her task was made even easier when Navratilova exited prematurely in the quarterfinals after a fabulous seesawing bout, probably the fortnight's best, with Zina Garrison. It was a particularly melancholy end for Navratilova, who during 1983-84 won six consecutive majors and contends that she too has won the slam. Few... agree: the slam, like all classic stories, must adhere to certain unities of time and space, the calendar year being one of them.

Navratilova successfully defended two Grand Slams compared to all four for Graf and won all four at least twice, compared to Graf's 4 times. Graf won one more Australian Opens, 4 more French Opens, and 1 more US Open, while winning just two less Wimbeldons than Navratilova. Graf had better consistancy and total dominance than Navratilova. Simply put, Navratilova was the best serve and volleyer ever, but Graf is the best athlete, the most well-rounded, and definately the best player ever.
