If you love tank combat, Steel Beasts is where its at if you have 125 bucks you want to get rid of. Its a steep price but the gameplay is amazing and its as true to life of a sim as you're going to get since the army is going to be using a format of the game(as well as about 10 other countries armies). Graphics are pretty as well. www.steelbeasts.com

What Steel Beasts does have is an amazingly complex simulation of two different tanks, an elaborate sequence of tutorials that draw you into the experience, and a number of missions that tax your abilities to control the mechanical monsters. There's no campaign mode here; it's a pure simulation, with posited scenarios and much destruction.

As a detailed PC-based simulator of modern mechanized warfare, Steel Beasts centers around two of the world’s most awesome main battle tanks: the US’s M1A1 Abrams, and Germany’s Leopard 2A4. Players can experience all the sights and sounds of modern armored combat from the gunner’s or tank commander’s position, as well as the challenges of tactical planning and decision making from a powerful map view. In addition, multiplayer support allows any mission to be played over a network with any cooperative or competitive style of play, including multiple players in a single tank.

Although Steel Beasts may appeal to many people, it is aimed at the more serious simulation fans. A large part of the development time has been spent on creating sophisticated algorithms so that units behave intelligently and real-world tank tactics will work - two things that are sorely lacking in all current tank sims. For example, units are smart enough to automatically avoid minefields, move away from artillery strikes (when allowed to do so), go hull down, and even change hull-down positions when under attack.

Steel Beasts isnt merely a simits ... a tactical-level wargame. In most scenarios, youll command several unitswhich you can switch betweenand before the mission youll have to come up with a battle plan. This is done by plotting waypoints and routes of advance on a tactical map, and is almost a game within itself. You can order units, for example, to move down a road in column formation until it reaches a certain point, then to deploy into wedge formation as it approaches a hill, and then to take hull-down positions and conduct overwatch fire.

Critical response to the original Steel Beasts was quite consistent. Reviewers were initially put off by the substandard 640x480 graphics, then highly impressed by the gameplay, immersion and the intelligent-seeming behaviors exhibited by the computerized units.
