Supposedly named Steamboat Springs in 1865, French trappers thought they heard the chugging of a steamboat while riding through the city. But it was the hot springs that chugged until 1908 when the railroad blasted out the rock chamber over the springs. Northern Utes (the Yampsatika) summered in the area as early as the 1300s. Whites first settled here in 1875 and although they used skis to get around in the winter, it wasn't until 1913 that they started skiing for fun. The rest is history. Be forewarned... according to local legend, the "Yampa Valley Curse" means visitors are cast under a spell that compels them to return again and again.

Steamboat Springs’ earliest settlers used flat boards that resembled skis to travel through the snow – a primitive mode of transportation that foreshadowed the area’s future as a ski resort destination. Today, Ski Town, U.S.A. is most famous for its fantastic tree skiing and feathery-light snow, commonly referred to as champagne powder. Vacationers from around the world venture to the Steamboat Ski Area, one of the largest ski mountains in North America, to traverse nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. The city of Steamboat Springs’ Howelsen Hill Ski Area, the largest ski jumping center in the country, has a history of preparing skiers for international competition, and it continues to train Olympic athletes. Steamboat Springs, nestled amid the Routt National Forest and Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area, virtually transforms in the summer. Colorful hot air balloons take to the skies, hillsides once covered in snow bloom with vibrant wildflowers, and lifts that formerly contained skiers or snowboarders carry bikers up to mountain trails.
