One of the best ways to relive the glory days of the SS United States is through the home movies of passengers and crew who travelled aboard her. Click on the image at left to cross the pond with the Barol family of Philadelphia in the early '50s, set to music performed by the ship's own orchestra. Note the shots of Dr. Barol on deck with the signal flags -- this was shot just prior to the maiden voyage!

Unlike most other championships currently defended on RAW and SmackDown!, the United States Championship did not start out as a recognized WWE Championship. Rather, the U.S. Championship got its roots in WCW. Many of wrestling's greatest names have staked claim to the U.S. Championship during the title's early years, including WWE Hall of Famers Sgt. Slaughter and Greg Valentine. With each great name that captured the championship came more prestige. In the late 1990s... the U.S. Championship was vacated more times than sports-entertainment fans could keep up with. As a result, the championship lost a bit of its luster.

From Alaska to Florida, the United States is possibly the most geographically disparate country in the world. The majority of American private islands properties are located near the eastern seaboard, especially in Maine, New York and Florida. Islands for sale in the US range from tropical Florida keys to rugged lodges in Alaska. Naturally, the weather varies as widely as the country's terrain. In a July 31, 2004 article in the Philadelphia Inquirer NCL's CEO, Colin Veitch, says he believes the SS UNITED STATES will be successful sailing on a east coast to west coast cruise route via the Panama Canal. Veitch says NCL is talking to ship yards about Big U refurbishment and that the ship could be sailing in six years. If you were on the Philly waterfront last week you would have seen dozens of workers aboard the U - tending to her lines.
