The Staten Island Yankees (formerly in Oneonta) are the newest member of the Yankees family and the first minor-league baseball team to ever play in New York City. They began their inaugural season in June 1999, as a member of the New York-Penn League. CurrentYankee stars Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada all began their careers in this league.

The Staten Island Yankees had a promotional night with an oriental flair to it. On Monday Night July 25th it was Japanese Heritage Night at the Ballpark in Saint George. New York Yankee Left Fielder Hideki Matsui was on hand to join in on the pregame ceremonies. Here are some photos from the night.
On August 16, the Staten Island Yankees held their first ever, shirt off their back night; the team wore special 1/2 jerseys. This night the fans got to see Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez started the game, who wore number 26 1/2. The sold out crowed witnessed him strike out 11 batters, pitching six innings and giving up only two hits. The baby bombers won this game 8-1.
Staten Island North Shore economic revitalization: The Staten Island Yankees ballpark is just one part of a major economic revitalization effort on Staten Island ’s north shore. The land adjacent to the stadium has metamorphosed from a strip of unused railroad tracks to a scenic promenade with trees, ponds, benches and bike paths, giving a perfect vantage point to view New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. The project ... called for the construction of the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences and the National Lighthouse Museum. But the cornerstone of the plan was the $81 million dollar renovation to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, the biggest revitalization effort in the borough’s history.

The Staten Island Yankees' victorious season was built on outstanding pitching and hitting. The team's pitching staff led the league in nearly every category during the regular season, including finishing first in team pitching with a 2.85 ERA. Left-hander Andy Beal was the league's premier pitcher, with a 9-3, 2.34 ERA record.
