In Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns, you can play as the breakaway secessionist Confederacy or Galactic Republic, as it begins to build up its own military capabilities. You'll begin 14 single-player missions featuring characters, vehicles, and locations based on the movie Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. Now you can use more than 200 new units, including troopers, bounty hunters, and craft, and upgrade your shields and power cores.

Because each side has essentially the same forces, Galactic Battlegrounds sometimes feels like it's not doing justice to the rich potential of the Star Wars universe. Would it have killed LucasArts to make the sides substantially different? In Age of Kings, the Britons don't vary too drastically from the Celts because, well, they're both human civilizations that evolved along similar lines. But the only real excuse for the Gungans and the Galactic Empire being so similar is that this is the way Age of Kings did it.

Lucas Arts does manage to imbue Galactic Battlegrounds with enough distinctive Star Wars personality to allow it to stand on its own two feet. In addition to the main campaign, there's an endless series of random skirmish maps you can play on, an editing mode for creating your own maps and a multiplayer mode that allows up to eight people to play together on the Internet.

A special edition version of Star Wars Starfighter ... will be available for Xbox in the U.S. in November. Star Wars Starfighter is being adapted for PC and Xbox by San Francisco-based Secret Level. The PC version will release in other territories outside the U.S. and Canada in late 2001.
