AT-ATs on Hoth. Unlike the heroes of earlier space set sci-fi film and TV series such as Star Trek, the heroes of Star Wars are not militaristic types but romantic individualists. College literature professors have remarked that the Star Wars saga, with its struggle between good and evil, democracy and empire, can be considered a national epic for the United States. Star Wars celebrities are special guests during each weekend, taking part in meet-and-greet sessions, star conversations and Hollywood-style motorcades. This year, fans will get to hear from actors and the creative forces behind the film saga.
The original Star Wars film (Episode IV) first saw TV release in February 1983 on HBO,Showtime, and the Movie channel. (Cinemax would not air it until November 2006) The original asking price was $1 per subscriber which would cover the entire production budget for the film solely from money from HBO. CBS had exclusive network rights when it aired on commercial television one year later, and continued on CBS for several years. The remaining films in the original trilogy ... aired on premium cable before airing on network television (NBC acquired the original network rights to The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi).

Star Wars was originally slated for release in Christmas 1976; ... delays pushed the film's release to Summer 1977. Already anxious about meeting his deadline, Lucas was shocked when his editor's first cut of the film was a "complete disaster." After attempting to persuade the original editor to cut the film his way, Lucas replaced the editor with Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. He also allowed his then-wife Marcia Lucas to aid the editing process while she was cutting the film New York, New York with Lucas' friend Martin Scorsese. Richard Chew found the film had an unenergetic pace; it had been cut in a by-the-book manner: scenes were played out in master shots that flowed into close-up coverage. He found that the pace was dictated by the actors instead of the cuts.
Prior to writing the script for Star Wars, George Lucas originally wanted to make a film of Flash Gordon. The rights for Flash Gordon... were held by Dino De Laurentiis, and Lucas decided to work on his own science fiction/fantasy project instead.
