England Wheat Field CBS Television officially announced that they will be releasing digitally remastered episodes of Star Trek, with new special effects and music -- drastically updating the look and feel of the series to contemporary standards. The retouched episodes will ... feature higher quality sound for the opening theme, and glitches in the montage will be rectified. Reports the official website: "The remastered episodes have been converted from the original film into a High-Definition format, which gives viewers a clearer, crisper, more vibrant picture than before, even when viewed in standard definition. Once stations updrage and start broadcasting HD signals, the episodes will be all ready" for that format. The plan is to start converting fan favorite episodes first, beginning with "Balance of Terror", who's story points allow the new process to be fully demonstrated.

Star Trek Nemesis Star Trek began life as a pilot for the NBC in 1964 as the space race between the US and the then USSR gathered momentum. Creator Gene Roddenberry's vision of a benevolent imperialism in the form of a federation of planets, and storylines based around exploration and discovery chimed with the age. The Cold War years were uncertain ones for many and Roddenberry's statement of hope for the future was comforting. But the first pilot, "The Cage," was never aired and it took another two years and a second pilot to convince NBC to commission a series. Star Trek was first broadcast on Sep. 8, 1966 and lasted just three years before being cancelled, ironically in the year man first walked on the Moon. (See Original Series episodes.) But the program refused to die: endless repeats, worldwide syndication and the growing phenomenon of Star Trek conventions kept the show alive in the minds of fans.
The Star Trek universe paints a utopian vision of humanity in the future, positing an interplanetary social system that includes The United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. The United Federation of Planets is a peaceful union of planets and species in the Milky Way galaxy's Alpha Quadrant, with a mission of peaceful exploration. Starfleet is a military organization, an extension of the Federation.
In September 2006, CBS Paramount Domestic Television (now known as CBS Television Distribution) began syndication of an enhanced version of Star Trek: The Original Series in high definition with new state-of-the-art CGI visual effects. [19] These are being done under the supervision of Mike Okuda, technical consultant to several of the later series. The restoring and updating of the visual effects is being performed by CBS Digital. All live action footage was scanned in high definition from its first generation 35 mm film elements, while visual effects shots have been digitally reproduced. As noted in the "making of" DVD feature, first generation "original camera negatives" were used for all live action footage but not for external shots of the ship and planets, etc. Notable changes include new space shots with a CGI Enterprise, and other new models (a Gorn ship is shown in Arena for example), redone matte background shots, and other minor touches such as tidying up viewscreens.
Freed from the constraints of network television, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" allowed Gene Roddenberry to fully realize his vision of what Trek was all about. The result was a charmless two-hour plus movie with a lot of talk and very little action. Despite these flaws, the movie did well enough to inspire a sequel, albeit at a much lower budget level. They didn't let Roddenberry write that one, so it was a smash hit and the franchise was reborn.
